Day 2: Surf Waikiki

Note to self
  • Always wear a t-shirt when surfing

Today was unbelievably fun! We rented a car and drove to the north shore. We checked out where they film Lost, and saw tons of beautiful beaches. Its really a shame we didn’t know earlier that the North shore has much more to see than the the city (Waikiki); we probably would have budgeted to spend more time there!

We made the most of it, then headed back for our surfing lesson with Matt who worked at the Polynesian Beach Club Hostel where we were staying. Man, surfing was SO MUCH FUN! Both of us were able to stand up and ride a few waves, it was such a thrill! I have rashes all over from the board. I even fell out of my top a few times, how fantastic. Should have worn a t-shirt over my bathing suit… Clearly I gave a creepy guy got a good show though. He smiled, and smiled, and stared…

Anyway, we had a blast, Beth and I, and an Aussie from the hostel. When we got back there were new people in our hostel room, which was semi-private. We had our own private bedroom which was attached to a room with 6 beds. The new guys were also Australian, and had some pretty wicked accents, so we introduced ourselves and made plans to get some food. The food sucked, but it was pretty fun to meet some new travellers: Rob and Nuno.

There was a keg party happening back at the hostel because they had been filming a Brazilian Soap Opera during the day, and everyone was having a good time. They kept getting noise complaints however, so the keg party dispersed soon enough. Most of the people took off to the bars. We stayed behind with the Aussies and had a few beers in our room. None of us were ready to head to bed yet, so we all took a walk around Waikiki. We were sad to see the night end– we fought hard to stay awake!

Rob and Nuno were super nice; they joined us for breakfast in the morning before our shuttle to the airport picked us up.

It felt so sad to leave right when we were starting to get to know the staff and the other travellers, but we were only 2.5 days into our journey, and there was much more to see!
