Day 3: The Garden Isle

Kona Coffee
  • The best coffee you’ll ever drink…
  • Damn people here are friendly!
  • I’d be friendly too if Toronto had this weather. And coffee.

We are unbelievably sore from surfing! The ribs hurt the most- rather unexpectedly!

We start the morning off by packing up our stuff, as we’re leaving Oahu and heading to Kauai, the Garden Isle. We’ll definitely miss the hostel! So much fun to meet all the people!

The view from the airplane is spectacular. The ocean is the most vivid teal colour, and there are little houses in the ocean! The flight is short, only 40 mins or so (a nice change from the Toronto-to-BC-to-Hawaii flights… It’s quite the shock when we land, and it pretty much looks like we are in the middle of nowhere. A gigantic… garden…? There is one major highway that goes almost all the way around the Island, so its pretty much impossible to get lost! If you do, its only a few seconds before you notice which side the sea is on and what side the mountains are on!

The ocean is so warm that even I can go swimming! I don’t need any coaxing to get in! Not to mention its so clear, so you know exactly what you are swimming in.

Our cottage at Kauai Dawn

Kalapaki Beach is so gorgeous! We arrived at our Kauai Dawn Cottage and Dawn greeted us with beaded necklaces. She showed us around our new place, which was beautiful and extremely secluded! A definite change of pace from Waikiki! We have our own private jacuzzi on the deck, as well as a washer/dryer and gas grill! The Mariott is a short drive from our place, at Kalapaki Beach. The scene is incredible – mountains surround the beach and it is so beautifully landscaped. I can’t even imagine how much the rooms here cost??

We hope to visit Poipu beach, which is recommended in our Guide Book. Then Waimea Canyon, and as much else as we can see. Food here is so expensive, even though we make most of our meals! Groceries are expensive, and so is eating out. There is just no way around it! Beth and I made a yummy pasta meal, poured some wine, and sat out on our deck, relaxing to the sound of waves. I remember thinking to myself, I’ve never been so relaxed in all my life…
