Day 5: Snorkelling in Poipu

Poipu
  • Poipu has the best snorkelling
  • The Hawaiian State fish is the Humuhumukununukuapua’a. I’m not even kidding.
  • I saw Dory from finding Nemo!

Today we are in Poipu, in the south of Kauai. Once again, the weather is gorgeous. We rent some snorkel gear from Nukomoi Surf shop, and we head to Poipu Beach Park. It’s pretty, but full of tourists. We snorkelled for a bit. I didn’t see anything interesting, so I came back to lay in the sun. Beth ended up seeing a Sea Turtle! The sun was getting hotter, so we decided to check out another beach – Mahaulepu – which was hidden at the end of a long dirt road, seemingly in the middle of nowhere!

We’ve just eaten lunch here, and now we are watching a brave soul do some kiteboarding. The guy is flying so high into the air, I can’t even imagine…! We’re hoping to check out some more beaches for snorkelling. This one is known for its wind sports, not so much for the swimming!

Endangered Monk Seals

After lunch we tried to walk further down the beach, but it was closed off because there was a family of Monk Seals –which are endangered– hanging out on the beach. Not only are they endangered, but they’re vicious too, so you need to stay far away from them!

We headed to another beach called Shipwreck beach. The waves were CRAZY! We definitely got tossed around. I think I might have stood a chance had I not been so concerned about my top getting thrown off. Those waves ate us up. I’ve never had so much sand in my bottoms… But, hey, I’m in Hawaii. I’m over it.

Beautiful Hawaiian FIsh

We headed over to Lumahai Beach to do some snorkelling again. HOLY SHIT, I had no idea all these fish were under the water! It was seriously like Finding Nemo! The fish were so beautiful, with crazy iridescent colours, glowing scales, and strange shapes and sizes! I could not believe what I was seeing. There were so many fish, and they come so close to you… I admit I got a bit freaked out because at one point there were so many and so close… and I saw one that looked like a thin strip of metallic paper, which I thought might be an eel, and I started to panic, and decided that I’d seen enough beautiful fish for one day! I know, I’m a bit of a weirdo, but fish have always kinda freaked me out. Thank goodness they were so gosh darn pretty.

We came back to the cottage to wash up and get the sand off our bodies – its EVERYWHERE. Then we head out to town for some dinner at Rob’s Good Time’s Grill. Food was awesome but the place was air conditioned like crazy, so we were shivering! We passed by an outdoor laundromat. Only in Hawaii…
